Sling TSi from kit to flight one cleco at a time

The Journey Begins: Ordering my Sling

Big milestone today—I officially ordered my Sling TSi quick-build kit from The Airplane Factory! 🎉 I'll be assembling it through the factory assist program at their Torrance facility, which should make the process smoother (and hopefully a little less intimidating). If all goes as planned, the build will kick off in August 2025.

While I'm Waiting for the Build to Start…

There's plenty to keep me busy before the kit arrives:

  • Finalizing avionics – Working with Midwest Panel Builders to lock in my panel configuration.
  • Registering my N-number – Making it official with the FAA.
  • Selecting and ordering upholstery – Choosing the right materials and colors to match my vision for the interior.
  • Designing the paint scheme – Collaborating with Evoke to create the perfect look for my plane.
  • Selecting and ordering upholstery – Choosing the right materials and colors to match my vision for the interior.
  • Taking training on key skills:
  • Sheet metal work – To get hands-on experience before starting the build.
  • Avionics installation – Understanding how my panel and wiring come together.
  • Rotax engine installation & maintenance – Preparing for engine assembly and long-term care.

3D Printing a Sling TSi Model

If you're as eager as I am and want something to hold you over while waiting for a build, I found a 3D-printable model of the Sling TSi on Etsy I had mine printed through Xometry, and the model is about 9 inches long and 12 inches wide.

Pro tip: Avoid heavy materials like Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) powder—it throws off the balance. Go for something lighter for a more stable display piece.

For now, while I wait for my kit, at least I have a mini Sling TSi to play with!
